Easter - A procession of the Risen Christ with blessing of the sea
At Porto Santo Stefano on Easter Sunday, at the first light of dawn a long procession, with the risen Christ carried aloft, passes through the streets of the town. This is a tradition deeply felt by the inhabitants of Santo Stefano evidenced by the very healthy participation of the population. A touching moment of the event is the blessing of the sea: the statue of the Christ is carried over the Port and raised three times, the moored vessels respond to the blessing by sounding their horns.

On 15 August of each year people flood to Porto Santo Stefano for the Maritime Palio of Argentario. Of the various events it is without doubt the most anticipated, attended and followed, not only by the inhabitants of Santo Stefano but also by tourists.  Already in the days preceding the 15th, "The palio atmosphere" can be clearly felt: all of the balconies display banners along with the colours of their particular district, the squares host local dinners with presentation of the standard and a procession until finally the big day, August 15, when the festival starts in the morning. People come out into the street wearing their particular colours and waving flags, the wait reaches fever pitch. In the afternoon there is a parade of the crews. At 19:00 the town stops to watch the Palio, the four boats, called "guzzi" that represent the four quarters of the town (Rione Croce, Rione Fortezza, Rione Pilarella, Rione Valle) compete in a canoe race which involves travelling a distance of 4000 meters and the winner of which goes to the town hall to collect the banner and to bring it to their particular district where the celebrations continues well into the night.
